In 1990 Seibu Kaihatsu developed Raiden Arcade Game for rent. This game was the first of the entire series of these scrolling shooting games to be developed and enter the market.
Since Seibu Kaihatsu is Japanese, they named this game Raiden. In Japanese, Rai means Thunder, and den means Lightning. It was also the name of one of the Japanese WWII fighters, and hence this name was chosen for the game.
The game is set in 2090, where the earth is invaded by aliens called Cranassians, and the World Military Alliance to combat these aliens, builds a new weapon called the Raiden Supersonic Attack Fighter. This is the only thing that will help the world.
In this game rental, there are eight scrolling missions, and the player has to move his craft in such a way that the enemy robots, buildings, aircraft as well as targets are destroyed. One has bombs, missiles as well as medals, which are awarded based on the score reached. In the gameplay, when the player is killed, the fragments of him become projectiles, and these are used to damage enemies as well.
The last stage of Raiden Arcade Game is defeating the boss of stage 8, and that accomplishes the mission. Post completion of the mission, the player is given 1 million points for every loop that has been completed. Then it moves back to stage 1, but the enemies come at a more rapid rate as well as they shoot faster.
